The Tony Award-winning musical Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, is a bold, imaginative story that celebrates the power of courage, intelligence, and taking control of your own story. Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, this production celebrates a multi-generational cast, blending humor and heart with show-stopping moments for performers of all ages.

Matilda Wormwood is an extraordinary young girl with a brilliant mind and a vivid imagination, growing up in a home that neither understands nor appreciates her. At school, she faces the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull, whose cruel rules stifle creativity and joy. With the support of her kind teacher, Miss Honey, Matilda discovers her own inner strength and begins to challenge the injustices around her.

A whimsical yet powerful musical, Matilda combines sharp storytelling with unforgettable songs to celebrate the resilience of children and the transformative power of standing up for what is right.

PRINCIPALS

Matilda Wormwood (Female identifying, Age: 6–10; Vocal range: A3–D5)
Brilliant, observant, and just a little bit dangerous in the best way. Matilda sees the world exactly as it is and refuses to accept that it has to stay that way. She doesn’t try to be impressive, she simply is. Her imagination is vivid, her sense of justice is fierce, and her power comes from truth, curiosity, and quiet confidence. This role requires a strong storyteller who can live fully in both reality and fantasy.

Miss Agatha Trunchbull (Any Gender Identity, Age: 35–55; Vocal range: A2–G4)
A tyrant in gym clothes. The Trunchbull runs her school like a battlefield and enjoys every second of it. She is controlled, calculated, and absolutely convinced she is right. She is an essence whose presence should dominate the room the moment she enters, sometimes still, sometimes explosive, always intentional. This is a role for someone who can command attention and create fear and humor without losing control.

Miss Jennifer Honey (Female identifying, Age: 25–40; Vocal range: F3–D5)
Kindness personified with a backbone she is still learning how to use. Miss Honey is warm, open, and deeply compassionate, but has spent years making herself smaller to survive. Beneath her softness is strength, resilience, and quiet bravery that grows over the course of the show. Requires an actor of tremendous warmth and earnestness with a lovely voice. She is the heart of the story and must feel grounded and real.

Mr. Harry Wormwood (Male identifying, Age: 30–45; Vocal range: D3–A4)
A walking bad decision. Loud, flashy, and completely convinced he is a genius, Mr. Wormwood talks fast, thinks faster, and never questions himself. He thrives in chaos and creates it wherever he goes. Big personality, strong comedic instincts, and full physical commitment are key.

Mrs. Wormwood (Female identifying, Age: 30–45; Vocal range: A3–F5)
If it is not glamorous, she is not interested. Mrs. Wormwood is bold, self-absorbed, and living her best life whether or not reality agrees. A former dancer who never stopped performing, she moves through the world with total confidence and zero self-doubt. This role lives in a heightened reality and requires a high belt, strong dance ability, and fearless commitment.

FEATURED CHILDREN

Bruce Bogtrotter (Male identifying, Age: 7–14; Vocal range: C4–E5)
Sweet, sincere, and just trying his best. Bruce does not set out to be a hero, but when pushed, he finds something bigger inside himself. His journey moves from overwhelmed to triumphant, and that shift should feel real and earned.

Lavender (Female identifying, Age: 7–10)
Chaos, but make it adorable. Lavender is bold, curious, and always ready to try something even if it is not the best idea. She is a true friend to Matilda and brings energy, imagination, and mischief.

Nigel (Male identifying, Age: 7–14)
Nervous energy in human form. Nigel feels everything very deeply and is often overwhelmed under the Trunchbull’s rule. A great opportunity for strong character work and physical storytelling.

Eric (Male identifying, Age: 10–17)
The kid who says what everyone else is thinking, out loud. Eric reacts fast and honestly, adding energy and humor to group moments.

Tommy (Male identifying, Age: 7–14)
More observer than instigator. Tommy may not always lead the charge, but he is an important part of the group dynamic and storytelling. Strong ensemble instincts are key.

Hortensia (Female identifying, Age: 10–17)
Fearless, scrappy, and a little bit proud of it. Hortensia has survived the Trunchbull and wears that experience like a badge of honor. She is bold, confident, and not easily shaken.

Amanda Thripp (Female identifying, Age: 7–14)
Small, sweet, and completely undeserving of the chaos around her. Amanda’s innocence makes her a clear target, and her reactions help ground some of the show’s biggest moments.

Alice (Female identifying, Age: 7–14)
Gentle and grounded. Alice contributes to the storytelling with sincerity and presence, helping build the world of the classroom.

Michael Wormwood (Male identifying, Age: 10–15; Vocal range: C4–E5)
Living proof that effort is optional in his mind. Michael is perfectly content coasting through life, fully aligned with his parents and uninterested in anything academic. He exists comfortably in the absurdity around him.

SUPPORTING ROLES

Mrs. Phelps (Female identifying, Any Age)
The town librarian. A calm, kind presence in a noisy world. Mrs. Phelps creates a space where Matilda is seen, heard, and encouraged.

The Escapologist (Male identifying, Age: 20–30) & The Acrobat (Female identifying, Age: 20–30)
Storybook figures brought to life. These characters exist in a heightened theatrical world and carry an emotional thread that mirrors the reality of the story.

Rudolpho (Male identifying, Age: 20–30)
Mrs. Wormwood’s dance partner with full commitment to flair. Brings style, charisma, and a strong sense of fun.

Sergei & Henchmen (Male identifying, Age: 20–50)
Big, bold, and a little ridiculous. These characters live in the heightened comedic world of the adults and should lean into physical storytelling and clear choices.

ENSEMBLES

Big Kids Ensemble (Any Gender Identity, Age: 12–18)
Confident, expressive performers who help drive the show’s biggest moments. Strong movers and storytellers who are comfortable taking up space.

Little Kids Ensemble (Any Gender Identity, Age: 7–12)
The heart of the show. These students ground the world in truth and honesty, making the stakes feel real. Authenticity is key.

Adult Ensemble (Any Gender Identity, Any Age)
A collection of distinct characters. Versatility, clarity, and strong physical and vocal choices are important.
