Characters/Roles

  • Maria Callas (Played by Ava Buchanan) - The woman that the play centers around (and based on the real opera diva herself), Maria is an integral character to the play who is revealed as being brave yet also fierce. She has strong opinions and believes that everyone should follow what she says, but it is out of her desire to make everyone be the best they can be.
  • Sophie de Palma (1st soprano) is a lyric coloratura soprano and Maria's first pupil to teach.  Sophie is very sensitive to criticism. She must be able to sing "Ah Non Credea," a recitative from Bellin's La Sonnambula.
  • Manny (accompanist) is the accompanist that practices with each of the students and Maria as he plays each of their songs.  Manny is captivated by Maria.
  • Sharon Graham (2nd soparano) is a young dramatic coloratura soprano. Maria criticizes her relentlessly and unapologetically for many things. She sings the aria, "Vieni t'affreta," from Verdi's Macbeth.
  • Anthony Candolini (tenor) is the only tenor and male to audition.  He is boastful and  stands his ground against Maria's criticism.  He is a spinto tenor and sings "Recondita armonia" from Puccini's Tosca.
